We are Carol Holbrow, Jenny Smith, Louise Yoxall and Charlotte Partridge and we are your local class teachers for Torbay and South Devon. Music with Mummy is a long established and well respected early years musical education program that has been running for 25 years around the UK and in South Devon for over 10 years now. Read on to find out a bit more about us and why we love what we do!
Carol is mum to two grown up boys and has been running classes in Paignton, Brixham and Dartmouth for over 10 years now. She is a qualified Early Years Practitioner who takes great satisfaction being involved in children’s learning and development, but who also has a passion for music. She grew up surrounded by music and singing as her Grandmother was a piano teacher and her Dad also enjoyed playing the piano and singing every day. She played many instruments as a child, including the piano, flute, and various brass instruments as part of a band, but she always made sure that she had a go at any instrument that came her way!
She has worked in various early years settings over the past 18 years or so, including preschool and nursery environments, and also at a local primary school where part of her role became planning and delivering the weekly music sessions to the reception class children. However, she wanted to get away from the formal style of teaching in schools and back to a more relaxed approach to learning for the under 5’s and getting to know their families too, so when she discovered Music with Mummy in 2007, it was the perfect opportunity to combine her two favourite things of children and music. She started with just 2 small classes in September 2007, and now over ten years on, she gets to see well over 150 children per week and she says she feels very privileged to be a part of so many little people’s lives.
Jenny runs her sessions at Babbacombe in Torquay. She qualified as a Primary School Teacher in 2004 and loved teaching throughout the Primary age range for 10 years at two different schools in Hampshire. As her husband is in the Royal Air Force, they relocated to Torquay to be nearer the support of their wonderful family when welcoming their two children into the world. She has always had a passion for working with young children and watching them grow and develop and, whilst enjoying this with her own children for the last three years, she felt it was time for a new start in the form of a new career.
Growing up Jenny played various instruments, including the piano and loved singing. She joined her first choir in Primary School and continued to sing in different choirs throughout her school and university education. Jenny was first introduced to Music with Mummy when she joined Carol’s classes in Marldon with daughter Isabelle in 2013. Together they’ve enjoyed Jolly Babies, Music with Mummy and Three-Four Time. Isabelle loved the fun and interactive nature of the sessions and Jenny has enjoyed watching her daughter grow in musical skills but also in self-confidence. And Jenny has enjoyed it so much, she wanted to start her own classes here in Devon and now Jenny has been a Music with Mummy teacher in Torquay since April 2016 and is loving every moment.
Louise (Lou) Yoxall
Lou attended Carol’s Music with Mummy classes with both her young children so has experienced firsthand the benefits for both children and parents. When the opportunity arose in 2017 to start running her own classes, she jumped at the chance.
Lou has been involved in musical activities all her life, she played piano and flute at school to grade 8 standard and achieved an A level in music at sixth form.
She has sung in school choirs and as an adult with local group Ashburton Singers.
Lou is an Ofsted registered childminder so has a detailed understanding of the importance of music in all aspects of child development.
She grew up in Buckfastleigh and returned to live in Devon to get married and raise her family, living with them in Newton Abbot for ten years. She moved to her new home in Kingsteignton in 2016, from where she currently runs her classes, and intends to expand her classes to Ashburton, Chudleigh, Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead in time.
Charlotte has two young children and has attended music classes with Carol since they were Jolly Babies. She has worked in nurseries for 5 years and following that worked at Torbay Council in Early Years and Children’s Services for 10 years. She left when she had her second child to enjoy more time raising them. Charlotte learned to play the piano as a child and has always enjoyed music in her life. When the opportunity arose to run Music with Mummy classes it was the perfect way to balance family life and enjoy a worthwhile profession that encourages children to learn and develop, strengthens the bonds within families and creates happy memories.
Charlotte and her husband have lived in the area for 15 years, moving down for her husband’s job after university. They love living in this beautiful part of the country and enjoying all the landscape offers. Charlotte’s parents, grandparents and brother also moved to the area 5 years ago, just in time for the arrival of Charlotte’s oldest child, who arrived after many years of waiting.
